Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.
If you have a disability whether it is visible or not, life is harder.
It’s a terrible thing to admit in 2024 but still our world is not designed for people with disabilities unfortunately.
The world is designed for and by able bodied people who when they are brain storming, sketching and designing don’t consider how it would work if a person was in a wheelchair or blind.
Not too long ago I was getting a bus in Luxembourg. There was a young guy at the bus top in a wheelchair. The bus was packed and the driver had to get off and get a ramp off. Everyone was staring at the poor guy as the bus driver was having problems attaching the ramp.
Where they all thinking poor guy he must be embarrassed everyone is looking at him?
Or I wish they’d hurry up…..
Or even this is his life he is used to dealing with this everyday.
If you’ve ever had an accident, hurt your leg or arm you will know how hard doing everyday stuff is.
Well imagine that being your life.
Imagine walking down Oxford Street in London blind.
Navigating people, bins, dogs rubbish.
Imagine loosing the use of your legs, having to navigate it in a wheelchair.
How hard travel, going out to a restaurant, seeing a movie how hard all these simple everyday things are….
Then imagine deciding that you are going to be the best athlete there is….
To become the best in your field with any disability I think is just amazing.
I have nothing but respect for someone who has the strength, pure grit and determination to do that.
To carry on and push through those voices we all have screaming at you to stop making you doubt yourself.
Telling you can’t do it.
I have so much respect x
