Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

To an extent I am, and I feel when you live away from home you tend to be more so.

I’m hugely emotional so big events like The Coronation, London Marathon or even the rugby can be big tear jerkers for me.

For me it’s more about the feeling of being part of something bigger, that connection you have.

Shared humour, shared anecdotes the ability to get each other through the familiarity of home.

The food we grew up with, the television programmes we watched.

The sentiment of the journey of life in your corner of the world.

The mundanity of life so similar in our genetics.

How we hold such small pockets of life and look at them whimsically as we age.

My Dad is Irish and in recent years we’ve reconnected with more relatives. Going back to Ireland always feels like going home and I’m proud of my Irish heritage. This year we went back for a holiday so the kids could meet some of their cousins.

It’s weird as I never grew up in Ireland but it’s a strange feeling of connection when I go back.

Years ago I remember one of my cousins saying to me “Ah you’ve returned home now”

At the time it struck me as odd as I wasn’t born there but then I understood.

Now it does feel like home.

This last year was very special for me as it cemented those feeling of before.

I’m proud of my English and Irish roots the shared history of my Fore Fathers.

In terms of patriotism when it comes to the rugby it’s Ireland all the way 🇮🇪
