Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?
When I was a girl Cabbage Patch kids were all the rage.
This particular Christmas I really really wanted one.
They were very expensive and we didn’t have much money growing up,
Every Christmas we’d wake up to lots of presents but small things of small value. My mum was very good at making her money go along way.
But what you don’t realise when you are a child is the cost of everything. If I got a cabbage patch doll that would be it.
So my mum toured the shops and found a cheaper replica doll.
This doll was prettier than the original and obviously less expensive.
Christmas Day I tore open the box and there she was.
I remember feeling a moment of disappointment but she was so pretty with a chubby face and long plaits in her hair I instantly fell in love.
She had a list of names I gave her but one name I remembered was Megan.
My mum had watched a series on television called The Thorn Birds. I’d only watched a little as it was inappropriate for my age but I remembered the girl Megan was so pretty.
Years later I now have my own Megan and I still live the name.
I lost my doll Megan for many years.
As I grew older I naturally wasn’t interested in dolls.
When my parents moved late last year miraculously she was found still more if less intact.
So now she has returned and she’s in my bedroom on top of my wardrobe.
There to stay x
