Years ago when I first started working in IT and Telecoms I attended a conference on future IT.

The guy giving the conference was a colleague who was a highly respected journalist and wrote a column for The Guardian.

He was a very good public speaker and talked about watches that you could talk into, phones we could use as cameras, watch films on, read emails it seemed unbelievable back then.

My colleagues and I all walked away discussing this.

We all had work phones but it was amazing to think this would be available one day,

Now years later I’ve joined the Apple phenomenon.

I have a watch, iPad, phone and Mac which I love.

But without doubt I would be better off without the phone.

As much as they do make your life so much easier they ruin it as well.

We were never so connected years ago and we managed. If you were meeting someone at 8pm you were there are 8pm as they would be there waiting for you.

If you went into a pub you’d sit, chat, have a laugh.

As a girl you’d get ready, do your makeup and nip into the loo in the pub just to check. You wouldn’t be sat there doing selfies, comparing scrutinising yourself again unreachable models.

If someone fell over in the street the first thing people would do is go help not get their phone out and go live.

I was from one of the last generations to know what it was like before and to be honest I’m forever thankful for that.

Was it harder without phones?

No of course not we didn’t know any different.

I have children we live in a dangerous world I do like knowing where they are and being able to contact them but we’d manage without phones.

Maybe we’d talk more, be more present in the moment,be more respectful.
